These are my actual diaries from when I was aged 9 to 12. Found them at the back of a drawer the other day and read through them (ignoring how mouldy they smelled). I may be biased when it comes to reviewing these, since I wrote them, but I will try to treat them like any other book.
They are a bit torn and jumbled, but it seems like they document 2018, 2019 and most of 2020. My handwriting was way better back then also, damn. They are written from the perspective of a teddy of mine, creatively named 'ted', as I found him more fun to write as than myself. This makes the 2020 diary pretty entertaining to read, (albeit a little cringe) since I've detailed the COVID pandemic through the eyes of a teddy bear. It was kinda morbidly funny to read the stuffed animal's thoughts on the ever growing death toll, and the rich people having birthday parties when we weren't allowed to have anyone over for Christmas. I'm glad I found a way to process all the scary things that were happening. There was a diary entry that had like a COVID safety warning TV advert just written out word for word, I must have seen it so many times. There was another funny entry that may have been from 2021, because it was explaining that Joe biden had been inaugurated, and I'd written that I suspected that because Trump was so upset, that he was going to overthrow biden and return for another rein of terror. I predicted trump's return, I can't believe it.
I really like the concept of big events through the eyes of like, an object. I like how that reflects how it feels to be a child when something big is happening, and you feel helpless. Could be an interesting.
Obviously not like, peak fiction in any way, but I like the concept, and I'm proud of my younger self for sticking to the daily diary grind because I definitely couldn't commit to that these days lmao I'm too lazy . 6/10.There were photographs and a few items taped inside the books, including a leaf, a piece of slate from Wales, and one of those plastic tokens you used to get at supermarkets to put in the charity donation box things. Also stickers and a few bad drawings.
